Applications will be considered on an ongoing basis. The candidate would ideally stay for at least 6 months with longer periods being preferable to ensure continuity in supporting theatre cases. The anaesthetist will work alongside our paediatric surgeons, anaesthetic clinical officers (ACOs), and an intensivist. The call although relatively frequent is not generally onerous. The on-call rota will be discussed with applicants on engagement. --The candidate should have completed training in General or Paediatric Anaesthesia --Completed a subspecialty Paediatric Anaesthesia fellowship or training program --Hold a current license or registration in their country of residence, thus allowing registration with the Medical Council of Malawi --Show proven experience: demonstrating a track record of experience as a Consultant Anaesthetist, showcasing your expertise in providing high-quality patient care. --This post would suit either an experienced clinician, a mid-career clinician on a sabbatical or career break, or a younger doctor with an interest in global health. Job Description:The anaesthetist will be responsible for providing safe general paediatric anaesthesia, sedation and pain management. Periodically, the anaesthetist will be required to provide support to the intensive care team with the management of the PICU and the surgical high-dependency units (HDUs). There are 3 operating theatres, a 6 bedded (ventilated) PICU adjacent to the theatres, a main HDU for older children with 4 beds, and a neonatal HDU with 4 beds. This position will supervise ACOs and rotating registrars working in the unit. There is an ACO on duty continuously in the unit. The working environment is pleasant, and the pathology varied and at times extremely challenging. The job therefore is an interesting mixture of clinical work, training, and systems development and refinement. MJC has 3 consultant paediatric surgeons who undertake all forms of neonatal and paediatric surgery except transplantation and open-heart surgery. The driver behind the establishment of the facility was to support the perioperative care of these patients. The operating theatres conduct approximately 130 cases a month and have conducted 11,500 to date. It is a 50-bed paediatric surgical hospital with 3 theatres, a 6-bed ICU, and two 4-bed HDUs. The unit is the national referral centre for paediatric surgery and includes the country's only PICU. The MJC is part of the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH), the academic teaching hospital of the College of Medicine, the only medical school in Malawi. The paediatric wards of QECH have approximately 300 inpatients in the general and specialized wards such as an oncology, orthopaedic, malnutrition ward, and burn unit. The Mercy James Centre is a public facility supported by Malawi's Ministry of Health, with supplementary financial support from several local and international donors.
