Anesthesia & Analgesia Update

Because Anesthesia & Analgesia is the official journal of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA), I briefly want to review the year 2001. This year was marked by two significant, new developments for Anesthesia & Analgesia. First, an online Rapid Review manuscript submission and review system was instituted in the Fall. The earliest results since the institution of this new online system showed a significant increase in manuscript submissions as well as a decrease in review time.

For those of you who have used this system as Reviewers, I realize that there is a learning curve in reviewing manuscripts online. I appreciate your tolerance and active participation in the review process.

The second development was the institution of "echocardiography online". This new feature allows enhanced presentation of information by supplementing case reports and general articles with video loops. Articles will appear in the printed journal as well as online with a link to one or more of the video loops. I would encourage the SPA membership to use video supplements for their articles when submitting to the Journal. These greatly enhance the learning aspects of the printed material. Manuscripts with video loops to be considered for publication may be submitted to the Anesthesia & Analgesia editorial office on zip disk, CD ROM or via e-mail (aaeditor@pacbell.net) or alternatively through a secure FPT site with a log-in name and password that can be obtained by contacting the editorial office. These specific formatting and file size requirements for the video loops are contained in the Journal's Guide to Authors.

When reviewing the performance of Anesthesia & Analgesia over the last year, the following types of manuscripts were submitted: original articles 1,294, case reports 921, medical intelligence articles 236, editorials 2, review articles 20, special articles 20, technical communication 12 and brief communications 60. Of this total of 2,526 manuscripts submitted, acceptance rate was 45%. One hundred and five (105) manuscripts were submitted to the Pediatric Anesthesia Section of Anesthesia & Analgesia. Acceptance rate for these manuscripts in 2001 was 43%. I want to express my gratitude to the SPA members who continue to submit their manuscripts to the Pediatric Anesthesia Section of Anesthesia & Analgesia.

Finally, I wish to thank the many members of SPA who serve as Reviewers. This is a very important part of the publication process and I rely greatly on input from the Reviewers. I realize that this is a time consuming process often done at night and weekends; however, if we are to continue to advance our knowledge in pediatric anesthesia and intensive care medicine through peer-reviewed publications, this time commitment is necessary. I attempt to not ask the same Reviewer more frequently than every three to four months. I have a database that contains information of last review, as well as the special area of interest, that I regularly use when scheduling Reviewers for a particular manuscript. I especially want to thank Peter Davis from Pittsburgh, Bill Splinter from Eastern Ontario and Meb Watcha from CHOP who have agreed to review a manuscript a month. In recognition, their name appears as an Associate Editor in the Anesthesia & Analgesia Journal. Anyone wishing to participate in this process, currently not receiving the occasional manuscript, please do not hesitate to contact me at (greeley@email.chop.edu).

I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve in this important process on behalf of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia.

Warm regards.

Sincerely yours,

William J. Greeley, MD #include ./footer_include.iphtml
