Editor's Corner

Rita Agarwal, MD, FAAP

We've finally dug out from the Blizzard of 2003 and are enjoying some warmer weather before the next snowstorm arrives tomorrow! By all accounts the SPA/AAP sponsored Pediatric Anesthesiology Meeting in Sanibel Island was a huge success. Reviews of the meeting are featured in this issue of the SPA Newsletter. Unfortunately, this year I was not able to attend (it seemed more important to stay home with my two new demanding little people). I hope all of you will read it and for those of you who haven't attended one of these wonderful meetings will feel inspired to join us in the future. Thanks to Drs. Gooden, Mancuso, Polaner, Ririe, Valley, Greco, Lauro, Davidson and Krupp for their reviews. Most of the reviews appear in the Printed Newsletter (PNL) as well as the Web Based Newsletter (WBNL).

In order to make room for the meeting review, there are fewer article reviews in this issue (thanks again to Drs. Gooden and Golden). Dr. Mancuso has done his usual superb job of reviewing and commenting on several articles from Pediatrics. As both a parent and physician I have found many excellent article in Pediatrics. For example in the March 2003 issue there are articles on the utility of oximetry for screening newborns for congenital heart disease; sleep and neurobehavioral function in hyperactive children; the risk of seizures after newborn heart surgery and hospital reported medical errors in children. There are too great articles to review, but I encourage anyone who is interested to take a look. I also wanted to encourage everyone with any interest in pediatric research to read "Do They Understand", parts one and two in the March 2003 issue of Anesthesiology, as well as "Pediatric Outcome Research" (January 2003, Pediatrics). As always if anyone has any ideas or interesting articles for the Newsletter please let me know at Agarwal.Rita@tchden.org.

We wish the best to our editor Rita Agarwal and her two newest committee members.
