Remaining professional and having fun
Although this edition of the SPA Newsletter includes some reviews of our October meeting of 2010, I write this at the close of the April, 2011 SPA meeting.
What struck me during the last day of the meeting was a discussion during the Pediatric Anesthesia Leadership Council (Chairs and Chiefs) that centered around professionalism. When working with children every day, it is easy to forget what it means to be a professional. It is not what we wear (brightly colored hats) or what we do (sing songs or tell jokes during inductions) that either defines or distracts from the meaning of the word. To be a professional in our field simply means that we are reliably present, perform our responsibilities to the best of our abilities, and relate to every patient, family member, and colleague with respect. We are simply fortunate that we can have fun doing it.
With that thought, I look forward to hearing from you about the electronic newsletter. In addition, I am in great need of some new material and would be happy to look at a review, an editorial, or article of interest for our upcoming editions.
