Prior involvement in SPA (Board, Committee, etc) (if applicable) – please provide a brief description of these activities
I have been a member of the SPA Education Committee since 2011.  In addition to attending the committee meetings in the Spring and the Fall, I have been a reviewer on the PBLD selection committee for each meeting since then.  In 2013, I had the honor to shadow Dr. Eugenie Heitmiller as she organized the Winter 2014 meeting in Fort Lauderdale, FL.   In this role, I helped to produce the first SPA application for ABA Patient Safety credits as well as participated in many of the organizational conference calls that went into the planning of this meeting.  This entire process was an invaluable learning experience for me.

In October 2013, I was selected to serve as co-chair of the 2014 Fall Meeting in New Orleans.  Under Dr. James Fehr’s leadership, I participated in all of the planning and organization of this meeting.  Specifically, I was tasked with the selection of the PBLD sessions for the meeting and the production of the Patient Safety credit application for the ABA.

It was an extreme honor to be the chair of the Fall SPA meeting in San Diego in 2015.  My prior experiences prepared me to organize and plan this meeting.  With the assistance of an outstanding planning committee, I oversaw the selection of the meeting topics, speakers, and sessions.  I feel that this meeting was a great success, and it only heightened my desire to take a larger role in the SPA community.

Involvement with other national/international (pediatric) anesthesia organizations (if applicable) – please provide a brief description of organization.  Please include past, present, and anticipated future leadership roles, with effective dates
In 2015, I was selected as a member of the ASA Pediatric Education Track committee.  In this role, I was tasked with the development of the clinical forum sessions for the ASA 2016 meeting in Chicago, along with two other members of the committee.  Our work resulted in the acceptance of three clinical form sessions, one of which I will be moderating.  My membership on this committee is ongoing, and I look forward to expanding my role in the future.

I have been a member of the Society of Education in Anesthesia since 2007, and served as the Associate Chair of its Research in Education Committee from 2013-15.  In 2015, I assumed the chair position, a leadership role that I will hold for 5 years.  In this role, I am tasked with overseeing the review and selection of the research and curriculum abstracts to be presented at the annual meeting, as well as the selection of the best abstract awards.  I am also a member of the selection committee for the newly developed SEAd Grant, a monetary grant supported by SEA that aims to support anesthesiology education projects.

Since 2011, I have been a member of the ABA Pediatric Boards Committee as a question writer.  In 2014, I also became an examiner for the ABA Part II Oral Board Exam.  Both of these positions will continue for the foreseeable future.

Examples of your collaborative and interpersonal skills
Daily, in both my clinical and academic work, I demonstrate strong interpersonal and collaborative skills. Currently, I am the Director of Cardiac Anesthesiology, which requires me to represent my clinical team in the Children’s National Heart Institute (CHNI).  In this center, I work continuously with the chiefs of cardiac surgery, intensive care, and cardiology to improve upon and further develop an outstanding care model within our hospital.  Representing my division amongst this group, I have a strong working relationship with the other leaders.  This role has often required me to both negotiate for my team and compromise with others to achieve our goals.

Within my own division, I have developed several strong academic collaborations.  My ability to work with others, understand their needs, and support their academic goals has resulted in several successes for the team, including publications and clinical recognition.

Within SPA, I feel that my strong interpersonal skills were essential in my role as the program director for the Fall 2015 Annual Meeting.  To make the meeting a success, several people came together with various ideas and experiences.  As the program chair, I feel that I was able to help foster this collaboration through good communication and recognition of various individual’s strengths.  I was able to delegate tasks appropriately as well as take on my own responsibilities to keep us on task.  Ultimately, this collaboration produced a very well received meeting program that met the goals of SPA.  While I feel that I played a key role in this success, the skills that I further developed in the process were priceless.

Leadership experience
Currently, I am the Director of Cardiac Anesthesiology at Children’s National Medical Center.  In addition to my clinical work, this leadership role requires me to oversee a team of six anesthesiologists that have subspecialized in the care of children with congenital heart disease.  Since assuming this role, our clinical service has continued to expand to include not only cardiac surgical cases but also the care of these children in cardiac catheterization, combined MRI/catheterization, and non-cardiac surgeries. As stated above, my role as a leader continues to grow within the CHNI, as I represent and lead a larger clinical care group beyond my own division.

Furthermore, I am an academic mentor to my team.  In this leadership role, I have been able to identify the strengths of various individuals and foster these to help them build an academic career outside of the clinical work that they do.  This has resulted in several clinical studies and publications.

As described above, I have had the honor to play a leadership role in both SPA, as a program chair for an annual meeting, and in SEA as the chair of the Research in Education Committee.  Directing a team and taking responsibility to ensure its success has been an outstanding experience for me that I hope to continue in the future.

Evidence of your Responsibility for assigned tasks
Even with numerous responsibilities, I am a very organized person that is able to complete the tasks to which I am assigned.   I have several examples of this.  As I shadowed Dr. Heitmiller in her meeting preparations, the option of obtaining ABA approval for patient safety credits was discussed for the first time.  I volunteered to put together SPA’s first application, and it was approved without issue.  Since then, I have helped put together this application for several subsequent meetings.

As the program chair for the annual meeting, I was tasked with organizing an informative and entertaining meeting that would appeal to the wide membership of SPA.  I was able to lead the planning committee to accomplish this.  This involved taking the ideas from the education committee, expanding on them and finding appropriate speakers, writing learning objectives, obtaining patient safety approval from the ABA, and flexing with last minute issues, just to name a few of my tasks.  Although there was considerable work involved, I greatly enjoyed the responsibility and was extremely proud of the meeting that we produced.

Furthermore, in my daily life at work, I am able to balance my clinical workload with the responsibilities that I have as the director of a division and my role as a clinical scientist.  My strong work ethic, organization, and ability to multitask have allowed me to be successful.

Prior involvement in SPA (Board, Committee, etc) (if applicable) – please provide a brief description of these activities.
I remember my first SPA meeting like yesterday, it was a joint meeting in 2003 with JSPA, I remember feeling lost and alone, not knowing anyone but remember I was impressed by the meeting content and the camraderie of the people. I learned a ton at that meeting and that inspired me to commit to become active in the organization.

I have been fortunate enough to become more involved in this wonderful organization over the years and with the help of many we established a special interest group in airway management that started with a handful of people. Some of our members were skeptical about what we could achieve with our small collaborative. I crafted a vision that many bought into and we grew that group to a large collaborative of now 25 centers across the globe. We have published important findings in this population and are working on addressing our care models. We are actively working on obtaining funding to carry on our work.

I have also had the privilege of serving on the SPA meeting planning committee for the past two years and I’m excited to be chairing the 2017 meeting. I organized the PBLDs two years ago and the workshops this past year. We grew the workshops and added the QI and PSH workshops which were extremely well received. Our meeting content and our organization changes lives, it informs and transforms the audience who in turn carry back new knowledge home which inevitably transforms patient care for the better. I look forward to contributing in a small way to this process. I am thankful to this wonderful organization and look forward to participating further in the future.

Involvement with other national/international (pediatric) anesthesia organizations (if applicable) – please provide a brief description of organization.  Please include past, present, and anticipated future leadership roles, with effective dates.
I am a member of the Society for Airway Management and the ASA.

Examples of your collaborative and interpersonal skills
I believe success is built on collaboration and selflessness, I have made this my personal mission and have collaborated with colleagues from various specialties on research publications including plastic surgeons, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, ENT surgeons, psychologists and economists. In addition I am leading a movement at my home institution to use behavioral economic principles to improve patient care. I am working with internist from Penn and psychologists from Tulane to create a hospital nudge unit to drive best practices.

I personally discovered mindfulness meditation as a practice after a personal tragedy and have been an advocate for this practice in our department. It is essentially attention training for the brain, just like one can lift weights and get stronger muscles the exercise of meditation strengthens the brain's attentive capabilities and is an essential skill for our line of work. I have been able to garner interest in this practice in our department and have started leading sessions prior to the start of the clinical day in the OR. In addition I was able to get buy-in from our hospital CEO to support a hospital wide talk on the topic by Richard Davidson the leading neuroscientist in this area and one of Times top 100 scientists.

As to interpersonal skills, I have been fortunate enough to have undergone several 360 evaluations, I am happy to share them. I am generally easy going and friendly, I deal with conflict by having a frank conversation with the other party. I have a keen sense of the emotions of others and try always to see things from their perspective. I am not perfect by any means, but one can be assured that i will always be frank, kind and empathetic.

Leadership experience
I just completed a year long leadership development course at CHOP led by the Wharton School of Business. I have learnt a lot about leadership, negotiation, emotional intelligence, inspiring organizations etc. I ascribe to the leadership philosophy of Simon Sinek (author of several leadership books) “leaders eat last”. Often leaders focus on external goals, production targets, patient safety etc but sometimes lose sight of the importance of caring for their people/ employees. I believe that all those external goals are achieved when the people/employees in an organization are cared for, feel valued and are empowered to action. I credit my successes to valuing and sacrificing for others, the times i have failed it has been because i was focusing on myself and that’s why my leadership philosophy is simply “leaders eat last”. I have gained leadership experience running several difficult airway workshops, developing the PeDI registry collaborative group, Participating in organizing the SPA meetings. I currently Co-Chair the hospital wide airway committee at CHOP.

Evidence of your Responsibility for assigned tasks
Please see prior questions, also I think it's important not only to complete assigned tasks but to go beyond assigned tasks and generate new ideas and inspire change. I am committed to making things better in whatever i do. Whether it’s riding bicycles and unicycles, doing challenging cases in the OR, creating new initiatives in our department or introducing meditation to physicians. My satisfaction comes from inspiring a team to achieve goals that they thought were impossible, my life has been littered with many seemingly insurmountable obstacles that are now in the rear view mirror.

Examples of your collaborative and interpersonal skills

  • I regularly work with and teach medical students, residents, and fellows in the operating room. I get along well with my colleagues at work.
  • I collaborate on several research projects focused on treatment of pediatric brain injuries. Mentees at all levels of training are involved in these projects (pre-medical students through junior faculty). Examples of these projects include:
    • Neonatal piglet model of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury: I collaborate with pathologists, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, and other neuroscientists
    • Cerebral autoregulation, neurologic outcomes, and non-brain co-morbidities in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy: I collaborate with neonatologists, neuroradiologists, neuropsychologists, neurologists, biostatisticians, and an epidemiologist
    • Cerebral autoregulation and neurologic outcomes after pediatric cardiac arrest: I collaborate with pediatric intensivists
    • Cerebral autoregulation in pediatric moyamoya disease: I collaborate with neurosurgeons, pediatric intensivists, and other anesthesiologists
    • Cerebral autoregulation during cardiopulmonary bypass: I collaborate with cardiac surgeons, pediatric intensivists, and other anesthesiologists
    • Stem cell therapy in brain injury models: I collaborate with scientists from the Applied Physics Laboratory, neurosurgeons, and other neuroscientists
  • I developed a program to improve work-life balance for pediatric anesthesiologists at Johns Hopkins (co-Chair of the Points Bank on the Job program)
  • I have mentored more than 14 mentees in activities that include shadowing in the operating room, presenting at national academic forums, publishing manuscripts, and proposing research grants.
  • As a working mother, I frequently advise other working parents and young faculty on how to be productive in the work place while still raising a family.

Leadership experience

  • I developed the Pediatric Neuroprotection Research Program at Johns Hopkins. This program is for medical trainees who want to become clinician-scientists. I help mentor trainees in the laboratory with a piglet model of brain injury in addition to clinical studies about cerebral autoregulation. We teach young clinician-scientists how to conduct translational research. Many neuroscientists and clinician-scientists at Johns Hopkins work with me on this program.
  • Co-leader of the Johns Hopkins Biomedical Research Investment Committee.
  • Co-leader to develop an internal research grant system at Johns Hopkins (awarded approximately $4 million over 5 years to fund research grants).
  • Co-Chair of a work-life balance project. We developed the Points Bank on the Job to give faculty “points” for doing jobs that are not typically compensated, such as serving on divisional committees, mentoring, etc. The points can be exchanged for housecleaning services, free meal delivery, groceries, etc.

Evidence of your Responsibility for assigned tasks

  • I was promoted to Associate Professor within 5 years of my faculty appointment at Johns Hopkins – this is very rapid promotion at my institution.
  • The research projects I have led resulted in extramural funding. My current research funding includes NIH K08, NIH R21, Johns Hopkins Clinician Scientist Award, and Medtronic funding. I have led research projects since 2006, and I have had continuous research funding since 2007. I am regularly the Principal Investigator on these projects, and I coordinate research collaborations across many disciplines (neuroscientists, pathologists, neonatologists, pediatric intensivists, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, cardiac surgeons, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, anesthesiologists, etc.).
  • I supervise and ensure completion of many mentees’ research projects. My mentees routinely publish original research manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals in addition to presenting their research as abstracts and posters at national academic meetings. Several of my mentees have won research awards.
  • We recently launched the above mentioned “Points Bank on the Job” program in the Johns Hopkins Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology using pilot funding. The program has been successful thus far.

Examples of your collaborative and interpersonal skills
I am known as a “people person” and I strive to treat every person with whom I interact with the utmost respect.  These two traits have served me well in my leadership roles here at UNC.  Since assuming the role of Division Chief for Pediatric Anesthesiology, in coordination with our Chief of Pediatric Surgery, I facilitated the transformation of our operating rooms from an area that served both women and children to one that now serves only children.  Additionally, in conjunction with the medical director of our pediatric sedation service, I worked with nursing, radiology, and hospital leadership to help create the only anesthesia run pediatric sedation service in the state of North Carolina.  Our service supervises every pediatric sedation in the NC Children’s Hospital, whether a deep or moderate sedation.  Both of the above initiatives were very successful and required strong interpersonal skills.   I helped lead multi-disciplinary groups to collaborate and make changes in our process that were at times challenging the status quo.

Leadership experience
I have served as division chief for pediatric anesthesiology and physician director of the children’s operating rooms here at UNC for almost 8 years.  In addition to the above examples of my leadership experience, I have grown our division from a group of 7 to a current division of 14 pediatric anesthesiologists.  I have served as Vice Chair of Patient Safety and Quality Improvement for 2 years.  In this position, I manage the quality improvement efforts for our department of over 70 faculty, 70 CRNAs, and 60 residents and fellows.  In this role, I have recruited and hired 2 departmental improvement coaches who under my direction and leadership are improving the anesthesia care for patients cared for at UNC hospitals.  I have had formal leadership training in the form of an annual UNC School of Medicine (SOM) Program in which a select group of UNC SOM faculty are chosen to participate in a program entitled, ACCLAIM - Academic Career Leadership Academy in Medicine.  This year long program was invaluable to my leadership development.  Based upon my demonstrated leadership skills, I have just recently been asked by the UNC Interim Chair of Pediatrics and Physician-in-Chief to serve on the Executive Leadership Council for North Carolina Children’s Hospitals.

Evidence of your Responsibility for assigned tasks
All of the above mentioned activities have required both attention to detail and respect for deadlines.  I have done both well.  In addition to making all responsibilities assigned to me by the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia of utmost priority, I have also been honored to serve a professional society that contributes so much to the advancement of our specialty.
