Pediatric Anesthesiology 2016 Preview

Welcome to Pediatric Anesthesiology 2016!

The Broadmoor

Dr. LalwaniOn behalf of the planning committee and the board of directors of SPA, I am excited to welcome you to Colorado Springs! This is the first time the meeting will be held in the Centennial State, and we are fortunate to be at the fabulous Broadmoor resort which was built in 1918, and is designated a National Trust ‘Historic Hotel’ of America.

`Pediatric Anesthesiology’ will offer up to 28.25 CME credits and 3.25 hours of ABA MOCA Part II Patient Safety credits for attendees, in addition to credits for those who choose to attend the Congenital Cardiac Anesthesia Society or the Society for Pediatric Pain Management meeting on Thursday.

The sessions will cover topics such as neuraxial additives, neonatal spinals, truncal nerve blocks, altitude medicine, exercise physiology, the long QT syndrome, pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, ECMO, resuscitation science, PALS, the difficult airway, cognitive errors, new ISO standards for small bore medical tubing, epidermolysis bullosa, pediatric burns, pituitary surgery, thyroid disease, and stress dose steroid replacement.

The AAP sessions include the Robert M. Smith Award, which will be presented to Dr. Lynne Maxwell from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for her long standing contributions to pediatric anesthesia. Following this, the AAP Advocacy lecture by Dr. David J. Schonfeld, Director of the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement, will tackle the hidden burden carried by families and caregivers in the aftermath of a crisis.

A wide range of workshops are being offered at the meeting, such as advanced ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia, techniques of peripheral vascular access, the difficult pediatric airway, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, acupuncture, fetal interventions, and designing effective PBLDs. The research workshop will describe strategies for pursuing a successful research career. First time workshops cover the practicalities of creating a pediatric perioperative surgical home, and the implementation of quality improvement and performance management processes.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to sign up for an excellent selection of PBLDs that will be presented at the meeting, and attend poster presentations by attendees from a record breaking number of abstract submissions.

Sunday begins with updates on ABA MOCA 2.0 and the American College of Surgeons Standards for Children’s Surgical Care. This is followed by an educational debate about whether millennials are unique and need to be taught differently. The second part of this session features Dr. Edward Nemergut, the founder of OpenAnesthesia.org, who will discuss `Technological Innovations for Teaching and Learning'. The CRNA symposium will also be held concurrently on Sunday morning. Last, but never least, the ever popular 'Jeopardy' brings the session and the meeting to a close.

Similar to last year, SPA is also offering an ABA-approved MOCA Simulation Course on Sunday which has a maximum of 16 participants, and requires a separate registration and fee.

On behalf of the meeting planning committee, especially Dr. Inger Aliason (PBLD Coordinator) and Dr. John Fiadjoe (Workshop Coordinator and Co-Chair), we urge you to join us for ‘Pediatric Anesthesiology 2016’. We are confident that this will be an outstanding opportunity to absorb the latest science and clinical strategies delivered by experts in the field, network with friends and mentors, and enjoy the Broadmoor.

We hope to see you in Colorado Springs!
