Academic Hospitals are sometimes staffed by the Medical Faculty of an Affiliated Medical School. In many cases, the Physicians and other Faculty Members answer to the Dean and Department Leaders, but do not report to the Chief Medical Officer or CEO of the Affiliated Hospital. The Hospital administration has a tremendous interest in the clinical and leadership performance of the faculty. Because the hospital is neither the employer nor the administrator of the the faculty, it can be difficult for hospital administration to encourage changes desired in faculty practice, performance or leadership. With a vision for the next generation model for pediatric health and wellness care in Colorado, Children's Hospital Colorado is exploring a hospital-wide physician leadership development program. In concert with programs offered by the University of Colorado, Children's Hospital Colorado will identify junior faculty members recognized by their chairs for leadership potential and interest, and provide a tailored faculty assessment and development program, including 360° feedback and leadership coaching. Assessment of outcomes includes faculty member and department performance in key areas of clinical and academic leadership, hospital engagement, and retention of key faculty members. Future measures of outcome will include faculty promotion at the University and in the Hospital Administration settings.
