Involvement with other national/international (pediatric) anesthesia organizations
In 2015, I was selected as a member of the ASA Pediatric Education Track committee.  In this role, I have been tasked with the development of the clinical forum sessions for the ASA 2016 meeting in Chicago, along with two other members of the committee.  For the last two years, I have facilitated the submissions for the POCUS workshop.  My membership on this committee is ongoing, and I look forward to expanding my role in the future.

I have been a member of the Society of Education in Anesthesia since 2007, and served as the Associate Chair of its Research in Education Committee from 2013-15.  In 2015, I assumed the chair position, a leadership role that I will hold for 5 years.  In this role, I am tasked with overseeing the review and selection of the research and curriculum abstracts to be presented at the annual meeting, as well as the selection of the best abstract awards.  I am also a member of the selection committee for the SEAd Grant, a monetary grant supported by SEA that aims to support anesthesiology education projects.

Since 2011, I have been a member of the ABA Pediatric Boards Committee as a question writer.  In 2014, I also became an examiner for the ABA Part II Oral Board Exam.  Both of these positions will continue for the foreseeable future.

Examples of your collaborative and interpersonal skills
Daily, in both my clinical and academic work, I demonstrate strong interpersonal and collaborative skills. Currently, I am the Director of Cardiac Anesthesiology, which requires me to represent my clinical team in the Children’s National Heart Institute (CHNI).  In this center, I work continuously with the chiefs of cardiac surgery, intensive care, and cardiology to improve upon and further develop an outstanding care model within our hospital.  Representing my division amongst this group, I have a strong working relationship with the other leaders.  This role has often required me to both negotiate for my team and compromise with others to achieve our goals.

Within my own division, I have developed several strong academic collaborations.  My ability to work with others, understand their needs, and support their academic goals has resulted in several successes for the team, including publications and clinical recognition.

Within SPA, I feel that my strong interpersonal skills have been essential in my various roles.  Both as a Program Chair and now as Secretary/Treasurer, I have the pleasure of working with a diverse and outstanding group of individuals that come together with various ideas and experiences.  I have worked with both CCAS and SSPM to update the bylaws with respect to Sections and membership tiers. I hope to continue to foster this collaboration through good communication and recognition of various individual’s strengths as I continue to serve SPA.

Leadership experience
Currently, I am the Director of Cardiac Anesthesiology at Children’s National Medical Center.  In addition to my clinical work, this leadership role requires me to oversee a team of seven anesthesiologists that have subspecialized in the care of children with congenital heart disease.  Since assuming this role, our clinical service has continued to expand to include not only cardiac surgical cases but also the care of these children in cardiac catheterization, combined MRI/catheterization, and non-cardiac surgeries. As stated above, my role as a leader continues to grow within the CHNI, as I represent and lead a larger clinical care group beyond my own division.

Furthermore, I am an academic mentor to my team.  In this leadership role, I have been able to identify the strengths of various individuals and foster these to help them build an academic career outside of the clinical work that they do.  This has resulted in several clinical studies and publications. This year, I have been named Vice Chief of Academic Affairs for the Division of Anesthesiology at Children’s National. In this new role, I look forward to continuing this work on a larger scale.

Prior involvement in SPA (Board, Committee, etc)
I was elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the SPA in 2014 and will complete my 4-year term this fall. It was my pleasure to run the October 2014 meeting in New Orleans, which taught me how much effort the Education Committee and the meeting planners put into delivering a meaningful experience for the SPA membership. Following that experience, I have been provided various opportunities to contribute and to learn from fellow SPA members. I have helped organize the audiovisual capture of the meetings, have helped recruit speakers, have contributed lectures to IRPA that weren’t uniformly panned, and have developed deep and lasting friendships with other members of the SPA.

Involvement with other national/international (pediatric) anesthesia organizations
I am a member of the Academy of Anesthesiology. I am also a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a member of IARS and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. I am not actively involved in any leadership positions in any of these organizations as I barely have time to finish my soup on any given day.

Examples of your collaborative and interpersonal skills

  • I have spent the last 20 years of my life working in the domains of pediatric anesthesiology and pediatric critical care, particularly pediatric cardiac anesthesia and CICU. The challenges of working with intense and stress providers, perfectionist and abrupt caregivers, and worried and overwhelmed parents and family have taught me patients, resilience and the importance of good communication.
  • I am the director of our pediatric simulation center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where students, residents and staff learn to better communicate with others through modeled behavior, feedback and guided reflection.
  • I was selected to be the Assistant Ombuds for Washington University School of Medicine, where I bear witness to the suffering of talented and stressed individuals and provide a reflective ear and supportive guidance to help them navigate their personal and professional options.
  • I’ve been married to my wife Anne, a masterful child psychiatrist, for 22 years and we have learned humility together through the raising of three headstrong boys.

Leadership experience

  • Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiologist-Intensivist at St. Louis Children’s Hospital (since 1998)
  • Director of Pediatric Simulation Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital (2009)
  • Assistant Ombuds Washington University School of Medicine (since 2016)
  • Medical Officer, National Disaster Medical System
    • Served in New Orleans in 2005 following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita
    • Served in Arecibo, PR following Hurricane Maria

DIRECTORS

Dr. AunspaughJennifer Aunspaugh, MD

Jennifer Aunspaugh, MD is a board certified Pediatric Anesthesiologist and Associate Professor of Pediatric Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at Arkansas Children’s Northwest/University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Dr. Aunspaugh currently serves as the Director of Anesthesiology and Vice-Chief of Staff at the nation’s newest children’s hospital, Arkansas Children’s Northwest (ACNW). Jennifer played a primary role in building the Division of Anesthesia at ACNW beginning in 2016. A native Arkansan who has been practicing Pediatric Anesthesia since 2006, Dr. Aunspaugh has been part of the at Arkansas Children’s system since November 2008. Prior to joining the leadership team at ACNW, Jennifer practiced pediatric anesthesiology at Arkansas Children’s in Little Rock.

Arkansas State University is where Dr. Aunspaugh completed her undergraduate education receiving a B.S. in Zoology in 1994 and she received her medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean in 2000. Dr. Aunspaugh completed her anesthesiology residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock in 2005 and her Pediatric Anesthesia fellowship at the Monroe Carell Hospital for Children at Vanderbilt in 2006.

In 2009, Jennifer became the program director for the pediatric anesthesia fellowship program at Arkansas Children’s in Little Rock. In this leadership role, she built a robust program clinically and academically, being recognized in the pediatric anesthesia literature for the many fellows who have presented their Quality Improvement project outcomes at SPA meetings under her direction. During her tenure as the program director, Dr. Aunspaugh was able to recruit each year to full capacity (4 positions), retain some of those fellows as faculty at Arkansas Children’s, and was approved for two additional positions for a total of 6 fellows beginning in August of 2018.

Dr. Aunspaugh is a Part 2 Oral Board examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) and is active in the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia as well as the Pediatric Anesthesia Leadership Council. Her passion for education in pediatric anesthesiology has been a driving force for her involvement with the Education Committee for the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia and she was a member of the task force within the Pediatric Anesthesia Program Director Association who wrote the Goals and Objectives for fellowship programs to utilize nationally. In March 2015, Jennifer was honored to be asked to be a member of the Professional Panel and give a talk entitled “Goals for the First Ten Years of Practice” at the SPA meeting in Phoenix.

Dr. Aunspaugh is a graduate of the Executive Physician Leadership Program at the Kellogg College of Management at Northwestern University and a graduate of the American Association for Physician Leadership Development Program. These leadership programs have provided the skills required to hold various leadership roles at Arkansas Children’s Little Rock and now the Northwest Campus. In Little Rock, Jennifer not only served as a program director, but was also the medical director of the Ambulatory Surgery Center and Perioperative Services. In June 2017, she was appointed the Interim Division Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia in Little Rock until she transitioned in to her current leadership roles at Arkansas Children’s Northwest- Vice Chief of Staff and Director of Anesthesiology.

As of July 2017, Dr. Aunspaugh transitioned out of her role as the program director and changed her focus to quality/process Improvement and standardization of anesthetic practices. She has been instrumental in developing practice guidelines to standardize each pediatric patient’s care and provide a positive experience for the families of her patients. Two of those guidelines--Management of Pyloromytomies and PONV Prophyaxis-- have been presented as abstracts/posters at Society of Pediatric Anesthesia meetings.

Arkansas Children’s Northwest takes Dr. Aunspaugh’s career in a new direction with focus on efficiency, patient safety, and parent/patient satisfaction. ACNW is one of few centers in the nation with dual induction rooms in the operating room suite, therefore, parent present induction and family involvement in care of the patient pre-and post op is top priority for Jennifer. Impacting children’s lives any way she can remains at the core of Dr. Aunspaugh’s love of pediatric anesthesia. Being part of a new children’s hospital in an area where specialized pediatric surgical care was previously absent, is an honor and privilege and each day brings new challenges and revelations of how pediatric anesthesia has such an impact on children’s lives.

Dr. Jennifer Aunspaugh considers it honor to serve on the board of Society of Pediatric Anesthesia and will continue to dedicate her time to the education of our junior colleagues and development of practices that will enhance the care of children for years to come.

Involvement with other national/international (pediatric) anesthesia organizations
I have collaborated with Managing Emergencies in Pediatric Anaesthesia (MEPA), UK to organize the MEPA simulation course at Hershey.

Examples of your collaborative and interpersonal skills
In my leadership roles at my institution, I have been involved with multiple collaborative quality and safety projects with inter-professional teams including surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, respiratory therapists, pediatricians, and NICU and PICU teams.

  • At the SPA, I am actively involved in multiple committees. My collaborative and interpersonal skills have helped me become a link between committees/subcommittees and improve communication. I am also currently and actively working with a special group that is developing guidelines for monitoring ex-premature infants for postoperative apnea. As a member of the Quality committee at the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, I participate in reviewing checklists and hope to continue my active involvement in developing protocols and guidelines established by SPA. I am also contributing author to the Pediatric Anesthesia Problem based learning approach (edited by Lalwani ,Choi, Raman, Cohen) - proceeds of which will be donated to the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia Patient Safety Education Research Fund.
  • In my past role as Director for Pediatric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Alternate Site Anesthesia, I was responsible for several significant changes on the functioning and logistics in this area. These significant changes included dedicating an additional day for pediatric general anesthesia MRI cases, obtaining a major CMN (Children’s Miracle Network) clinical grant ($128,000) for an MRI compatible anesthesia machine and monitor, CMN clinical grant for glidescope ($15,000), and collaborating with Radiology leadership for the smoother functioning of anesthesia-radiology services in these areas. Of note, when collaboratively working with Radiology leadership, we were able to bring down the wait times for Pediatric general anesthesia appointments from 90 days to less than one week.
  • It was brought to my attention that some of the babies from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) who had MRI studies developed hypothermia after undergoing an MRI under anesthesia. I took the lead in solving this problem by developing a protocol, raising awareness, doing an audit of pre- and post-MRI temperature in infants, and working with NICU to obtain a vacuum blanket with help of funding from CMN. This inter-disciplinary quality improvement process, demonstrating completion of the PDSA cycle, was recently published in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • I feel very strongly about Quality and Safety at the hospital level and regularly report pediatric anesthesia quality data at the Children’s Surgical Center program at the Penn State Children’s Hospital. In order to improve quality of care for children on the autism disorder spectrum who are present for anesthesia, I am currently collaborating with our autism specialist to develop the Autism Ambassador Program involving medical students. This will be a unique family-centered program enhancing parental and child satisfaction.
  • Poor communication can lead to fatal outcomes. To that extent, I have actively led a standardized sign-out process (Time out for sign out initiative) between anesthesia and intensive care providers in the pediatric and neonatal intensive care units. My collaborative efforts have got various pediatric care teams talking and working together, striving for a change for quality improvement.
  • I am also collaborating with Pediatric teams to reduce unplanned extubation rates across operating rooms and NICU and PICU departments as part of a solution for patient safety (SPS) database.
  • In my role as Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia, I sponsored, supported, advised, and collaboratively worked with my junior faculty and nursing to improve parental and patient satisfaction when establishing intravenous access in older children at Penn State Children’s Hospital. This project (Lion’s pledge initiative) was well received and has been implemented and expanded to the entire Children’s Hospital.
  • Some of my work and opportunities have garnered interest from the media and lay press:
  • I gave a personal interview for being awarded the 8000th member of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (2001, Anaesthesia news, AAGBI, UK)).
  • I was also interviewed by the 105FM radio station for raising funds for an MRI compatible anesthesia machine and monitor (2010).
  • I was invited by Penn State leadership for a live on-stage interview to present the challenges with implementation of the standardized sign-out process in the ICU at the Inspired Together event at Penn State Health (2016).
  • I have been collaboratively working on multiple research projects on an inter-departmental and multi-institutional levels and continue my ongoing research in this direction.
  • I was recipient of the Dean’s award for Excellence in teaching at Penn State College of Medicine (2015).

Leadership experience

  • At the SPA, I am currently leading the development of guidelines for post-operative apnea monitoring in infants. I have led multiple similar projects but this one is particularly gratifying because it gives our group the opportunity to standardize the process of monitoring infants at risk for apnea following surgery thereby improving their safety in the perioperative period.
  • At the Penn State Hershey Medical Center and Penn State Children’s Hospital, I have held leadership positions of Director for Pediatric MRI and Alternate Site Anesthesia (2009-2016), Associate Director for Pediatric Anesthesia (2015-16) and Division Chief for Pediatric Anesthesia (2016 to present).
  • I have attended the Penn State Leadership academy for Excellence in Academic Medicine course at Penn State University, 10/2015.
  • I have been awarded two significant endowments - the Faculty Career Development Endowed Professorship (2011) and the Julien F. Biebuyck Endowed Professorship in Anesthesia (2017)
  • In my role as Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia, I represented our Pediatric Anesthesia division and was actively involved with our institute’s application for the Children’s Surgical Center Level I verification (American College of Surgeons) which was successful. This process gave me valuable experience in collaborating with multiple stakeholders in my institution while working toward a common goal, which helped me further hone my leadership skills.
  • I am involved with various departmental and hospital committees - including the Promotion and Tenure Committee, Anesthesia Executive Committee, Anesthesia Quality Improvement Committee, Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee, Children’s Miracle Network resource allocation panel etc. (9 committees within the department and 10 at the institutional level)
  • I have been the director for PALS courses and recently directed a course for our residents titled Managing Emergencies in Pediatric Anesthesia (MEPA, UK) at Hershey.

Examples of your collaborative and interpersonal skills
I believe that collaboration and execution are two key characteristics of successful teams. I am passionate about global health issues and work collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and others both in the US and abroad to improve the quality and safety of pediatric anesthesia around the world. For the past five years I have worked with members of the SPA community, the WFSA, and faculty at Vanderbilt University to develop a pediatric anesthesia fellowship at the University of Nairobi. This fellowship has graduated 11 pediatric anesthesiologists who are each one of very few or the only pediatric anesthesiologist in their respective countries. With this group, I co-founded SPAN (Safe Pediatric Anesthesia Network), a global academic exchange between colleagues from different resource settings. One of our key initiatives was to create a live video case-conference in which challenging cases are presented by pediatric anesthesia trainees, alternating between high- and low-resource institutions. This program has grown to include over nine hospitals on four continents with outstanding reviews from participants. The global exchange and learning from this program has been impactful for all involved.

Over the past seven years, I have been involved in the SAFE (Safer Anesthesia from Education) Project which provides refresher courses for anesthesia clinicians in low-resource settings who have limited access to continuing professional development. I co-directed the inaugural SAFE Obstetric Course in Rwanda in 2011, training over 90 anesthesia providers from 20 district hospitals, and helped author the SAFE Paediatric Course. With the support of the SPA Board of Directors and six SPA members, we ran the inaugural SAFE Paeds course in Latin America in Guatemala in November of 2017. The goal is for our Latin American colleagues to run more of these courses in their home countries.

Organizing efforts such as these requires strong collaborative and interpersonal skills.

Leadership experience
For the past five years I have Chaired the SPA Committee on International Education and Service. Our committee has over 100 members who are committed to global health work. Under my leadership, the committee has been productive in expanding the SPA’s global presence. There are several committee projects I would like to highlight:

  • Supporting the University of Nairobi Pediatric Anesthesia fellowship, since its inception in 2013, including hosting fellows in observerships in the US.
  • The refurbishment of the SPA Lecture Library which now includes over 20 peer reviewed lectures and has attracted over 1300 users from 80 countries since its reintroduction in June 2017.
  • Collaborative project with pediatric surgical colleagues. Developed guidelines for short-term missions in global pediatric surgery. Published in Journal of Pediatric Surgery and in press in Pediatric Anesthesia. These guidelines provide a resource and offer guidance for society members (APSA, SPA, AAP, other surgical, and nursing societies) interested in global health work.
  • Commitment by committee members to submit articles to the SPA Newsletter highlighting both committee and individual global health efforts.

Other leadership positions include:

  • Vice-Chair of the ASA, Global Humanitarian Outreach Committee
  • Smile Train International Medical Advisory, Board member
  • Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CHMC) Anesthesia Foundation, Board member

I am grateful for the support I have received from the SPA, the work we have done has had a truly global impact on the lives of children with limited resources. I thank you all for your continued support and look forward to contributing to this great organization.

Examples of your collaborative and interpersonal skills
In 2010, I established the OR to Cardiac ICU handoff system and algorithm at Children’s National Medical Center. I was the lead architect in developing an evidenced based system (modeled after the Great Orman Street paradigm) to enhance the efficiency and safety of handoff of patients undergoing cardiac surgery from the OR to the ICU. Through serial auditing and evaluation, the process was shown to streamline the handoff, improving communication, efficiency, and safety.

In 2009, I established new paradigm of communication to enhance timeliness and efficiency for cardiac anesthesia consultation and evaluation at Children’s National Medical Center. This involved establishing email listserv communication, establishing a method for real time communication, and a method that confirmed “closure of the loop”.

Between 2008-2010, I served as the Cardiac Anesthesia lead to guide and educate anesthesiologists at University of Mississippi Medical Center/Batson Children’s Hospital on anesthetic approach and management of children with congenital heart disease undergoing open heart surgery.

In 2011 and 2012, I served as the Cardiac Anesthesia lead to guide and educate Moroccan anesthesiologists on anesthetic approach and management of children and adults with congenital heart disease undergoing open heart surgery. This was supported via the Mosaic Foundation Initiative to enhance Congenital Cardiac Surgery and Telemedicine in Morocco.

Involvement with other national/international (pediatric) anesthesia organizations
Served as a Delegate for the Colorado Society for Anesthesiologists to the American Society for Anesthesiologists House of Delegates; 2013, 2014,

Examples of your collaborative and interpersonal skills
It has been my privilege to serve in multiple leadership positions over the course of my career. These opportunities often presented themselves at times of change and growth. This has required the ability to create a vision and set priorities, as well as bringing together groups of individuals each with their own set of perspective and ideas. Carefully listening to and validating those at the table is what enables creative and innovative programming with a path to success to emerge from the group. Engaging participants and fostering a sense of ownership in participants, promotes a vested and shared interest. Individuals take on responsibilities and demonstrate a willingness to collaborate with others. This leads to both the individual and the group successfully achieving the goals of the vision. I have seen this approach work in the development of a Pediatric Cardiac ICU and the expansion of Educational Programming at the institutions where I have worked.

Leadership experience

  • Medical Director, PICU Transport Program, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore MD; 2004-2006.
  • Medical Director, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus OH, 2006-2010.

  • Director of Education, Department of Pediatric Anesthesia, Children's Hospital Colorado, 2014-present.
  • Medical Program Director, Colorado Review of Anesthesia for Surgicenters and Hospitals, University of Colorado School of Medicine, 2016-present

I would consider it an honor to work with the SPA board to serve the society and its members and to strive for continued growth and innovation in the field of pediatric anesthesiology.

Examples of your collaborative and interpersonal skills
In 2009 after becoming the Program Director, I joined the Pediatrics Anesthesia Program Directors Association (PAPDA). In November 2010, I was elected to the executive committee of the Pediatrics Anesthesia Program Directors Association (PAPDA) which consisted of a six year term including two years as the president of the pediatric anesthesiology program directors, for which I used this national post to move training in Pediatric Anesthesiology to a new level of educational excellence. This was accomplished by working with other national leaders to develop milestones, core curricula, enhanced evaluation processes, and to encourage lifelong scholarship, professional development and personal wellness. During my six-year term I was able to establish overall national common goals and objectives for all pediatric anesthesiology training programs recognized by the ACGME anesthesiology resident review committee. The following two years under my term as president of the PAPDA national goals and objectives were created for the three of the mandatory rotations i.e. cardiac, pain, critical care. Finally, I was involved in leading in revamping of the national pediatric anesthesiology fellowship application for all training programs specifically in improving the section on narrative writing.

Since 2011-2015, I served as director and since 2015 as co-director for remote anesthesia services serving the Department of Radiology and Radiation Oncology at CHLA. My essential duties and responsibilities include planning and organizing clinical anesthesia services to ensure patient needs are met in accordance with professional standards of medical care and administrative procedures. I coordinate activities with other medical and nursing disciplines to facilitate safe inter-professional team patient care delivery. In conjunction with administrative and information technology personnel, I am involved in designing and evaluation of methods to ensure effective and efficient use of staff, facilities, equipment, and other resources while maintaining patient care standards. In addition, I review clinical activities and data to aid in risk management and to improve service utilization. Finally, I am involved in the development and implementation of quality management and utilization review of our combined services using sigma six and lean models in healthcare delivery.

I am also collaborating with the ACGME specifically with Dr. Eric Holmboe who leads the milestone unit on a research project on how faculty assess/evaluate anesthesiology trainees. The research team includes anesthesiology medical educators from Vanderbilt University and University of Kentucky - Lexington.

Leadership experience

  • Director of Medical Education and Faculty Development for the Department of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine at CHLA (2006-present), with the primary role of overseeing all educational activities within the department including membership and leadership of the Education Oversight Committee (EOC) and membership on the Clinical Competence (CCC) and Program Evaluation (PEC) Committees for the department
  • Director of the Pediatric Anesthesiology rotation (2006-2015), annually for 100 anesthesiology residents from seven programs and 35 student Nurse Anesthetists (NA) from two programs in Southern California. Residents and NA students begin approximately 12 times a year, and for much of the time I conducted their orientation, oversaw the training and ensured that the learner evaluations were completed and submitted. I also worked with many learners in difficulty and was the interface between CHLA and the home program directors.
  • Director of the one-year ACGME accredited Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship (2008-2016), with 10-12 fellows each year, overseeing all aspects of the program, including guiding fellow selection, scheduling, didactic education, clinical rotations, support of learner job seeking, learner assessment, instructor assessment, and program evaluation.
  • Co-Director of the 11-session leadership training program for fellows from both Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and Pediatric Anesthesiology (2010 - present) that has provided leadership training for junior faculty as well as all first year fellows (approximately 120 participants over 7 years) with a focus on career development and building leadership skills. This program is unique nationally with Pediatric Anesthesiology and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.
  • Instructor in the Leadership Courses (ACMD 502, Lead Self, ACMD 503, Leading Change) in the USC Master of Academic Medicine Program (2008 - present), which trains current and future medical school faculty around the United States (using both a synchronous online platform and annual onsite activities) - over 100 students total.
  • Member of Program Committee and Abstract Reviewer for national educational conferences held annually (2011- present): Society for Education in Anesthesia and the Innovation in Medical Education Conferences, both national conferences have approximately 250 participants per year.
  • Director/Co-Director of Clinical Operations for Remote Anesthesia services. The role is to improve the Clinical Operations, which includes a focus on performance improvement and quality assurance.
