Bubble - A Program to Make Websites or Smartphone Apps for Non-Programmers
By Anna Clebone Ruskin, MD
University of Chicago
Have great internet access throughout your hospital, and want to build a low-cost app containing publicly available information that is frequently used by your department? Bubble may be the solution for you. The fully graphic interface is as easy to use as PowerPoint, and contains features for adding text, icons, videos, images, or even maps. Publish to the web in seconds, then 'create' an icon on your smartphone (see illustration below for iPhone).
One advantage to this program is the ability to instantly update content, due to the fact that it is web based. The free version currently allows unlimited runs through information-based sites, although this would not work for medical apps since anyone on the web can technically edit the free version; a paid version allows for only you and the collaborators you designate to edit the app. Numerous free tutorials on app creation are also available from the creators on the website.
Due to the fact that this is website based, this program cannot be used for HIPPA information or any other information that is not public. Additionally, it would not work well for sites to be used in developing countries, or anywhere without excellent, reliable internet access. Unfortunately, conversion into an iOS or Android app that does not need continuous internet access is not currently possible with Bubble. Available on any device that can connect to the internet, paid versions range from $19-$480/month, depending on functionality.
